Advanta implants are a type of Gore-Tex (Teflon) material, with the upside that
it is permanent and the downside that the edge of it may show in certain facial
expressions. Advanta implants are made with ePTFE (expanded
polytetrafluoroethylene); which is a porous material and allows for tissue
in-growth. These implants are made by Atrium Medical, and are unlike other ePTFE
implants which are hollow, the Advanta is not tubular. Advanta is FDA Approved
for use.
Advanta facial implants are used to fill
deep wrinkles or folds, or to enhance,
augment or repair soft tissues of the facial area such as the lips. Advanta
comes in sizes ranging from 1.8mm to 5mm in diameter – and also is available in
round or oval strands.
Advanta like Gore-Tex or
SoftForm
is a more invasive procedure than getting an injectable filler, so the surgical
and the recovery time is longer. A small incision is made in the corner of the
mouth for lip augmentation. Then a tunnel or a space is created for the implant.
These very soft implants which are easily threaded into the lips, corner to
corner, by a metal trocar under
local anesthesia. External sutures are needed to
close the small incision in the corners of the mouth. The sutures normally stay
in for a period of 5 to 7 days. The procedure takes from 30 to 45 minutes to
perform and requires a local or a regional anesthetic – with or without
sedation. Some swelling, bruising, and some mild discomfort will occur for up to
1 week.
